Abstract: Abstract As the process of global integration has reached the boundaries of developing countries, there has been concern about the role to be played by these nations in the new world economic order. In many parts of the developing world, efforts are being made to transform economic activities so as to enhance their international competitiveness. Parallel to these efforts, market-oriented policies have been generally adopted based on World Bank and IMF recommendations, supported by the recognition of the distorting effects of government intervention.
