Chapter 2 in Regional Convergence in the European Union, 2002, pp 23-52 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Economic growth and its causes have been at the centre of economists’ attention for a long time. In the renewed debate about the factors explaining growth and the validity of the dominant models, the explanation of national and regional inequalities has been the real test for new theoretical strands and their predictions. Recent debates on these topics have largely been focused on the controversial question of convergence or divergence between countries or regions with different levels of economic development, which has become the touchstone in evaluating the validity of old and new models2.
