Abstract:
Abstract Many businesses such as manufacturers base their business model on selling more products. With the goal of helping organizations design their business models to be more sustainable, a design approach can be used in foresight workshops to arrive at more sustainable business models, as illustrated with five participating small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) manufacturers. This is demonstrated by building on three levels of design outcomes: business models, services and products. The results show that the design outcomes were evolutive, open-ended and integrative. The sustainable business model design outcomes address three levels of management decisions in organizations, i.e. strategic, tactical and operational. A pyramid diagram can serve as a guide for SMEs. The design outcomes can inspire other SMEs to generate their own visions of a sustainable business model for their organization.
