Chapter Chapter 1 in Digital Transformation of Supply Chains, 2026, pp 3-39 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, we investigate how organizations can strategically leverage digital transformation to design superior, future-ready supply chains. It examines the evolution from early digitalization to the comprehensive Supply Chain 4.0 paradigm, outlining strategic applications and considerations for enhancing critical capabilities: agility, performance, and resilience. This enhancement is driven by advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data analytics. The discussion illustrates impactful key applications of these technologies across essential sectors including intelligent transportation, automated warehousing, optimized logistics, and strategic procurement. Furthermore, the chapter outlines essential Key Performance Indicators for effectively measuring transformation success and explores crucial implementation considerations. It critically distinguishes between merely ‘doing digital’ and achieving a holistic, enterprise-wide ‘being digital’ state, offering practical insights for developing efficient, adaptive, and robust supply chains capable of prospering in today’s complex and dynamic global landscape.
