A chapter in Digitalization, 2021, pp 153-166 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract For years, innovation managers were primarily thought of as sources of ideas, whereas nowadays digital change is transforming the role into that of a coordinator. New tasks require new competences, which are aimed in particular at forging boundaries as company processes become increasingly interconnected and digital. Using topic modeling, an analysis of 126 online job advertisements for innovation managers showed that special competences are required for the interaction between companies and that innovation managers must fulfill a broad set of tasks. For example, job postings for innovation managers now only implicitly require a need for computer skills, and the requirement is always combined with another requirement for linguistic, mathematical, or scientific skills, as well as social skills. Our results show that job advertisements seek innovation managers that are a combination of dedicated presenters, analysts, digital business engineers, knowledge managers, and radars for the economic environment.
