A chapter in Digitalization, 2021, pp 145-152 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract It is under-researched how top management (TM) of SMEs, often confronted with inadequate managerial skills and limited resources, drive digitalization to overcome the Productivity Paradox (PP). Building on a process-oriented empirical approach, we aim to identify how SMEs TM address the implementation of digital innovations out of a PP perspective. Over 3½ years, we investigated and accompanied the implementation attempts of digital innovation in 39 SMEs. Our conclusions are drawn from participatory action research. We reveal four TM related barriers to digital innovation in SMEs, which hamper SMEs from overcoming the PP. In the final discussion, we conclude with theoretical and practical implications.
