Abstract: Abstract Because of specific socio-technical factors, a new management approach was created in Silicon Valley, California called the Silicon Valley Model. The model was, and is, in many respects the polar opposite of the traditional “Machine Bureaucracy.” For example, top leaders are externally focused on innovation and growth, rather than internally focused on cost-efficiency and control. People are valued for their entrepreneurial qualities, not just ability to execute orders; the culture emphasizes speed and flexibility instead of efficiency and risk avoidance; the organization is flat and semi-structured instead of hierarchical and rigid; and coordination is achieved through shared values and simple rules rather than through strictly standardized work processes.
