Learning to Lead: A Non-profit Organization Perspective

Johann Liebeton ()

A chapter in Life Science Management, 2022, pp 201-209 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract For all organizations—regardless of whether they are small or large—it is a central necessity to develop and retain leaders. The necessity for leaders arises from the fact that organizations work most successfully when they pull together in one direction. A good leader is characterized by many attributes, which can be described as leadership qualities: in their essence leaders can inspire, motivate, even encourage others to leave their own comfort zone and in the process reveal hitherto unrecognized talents. This chapter will focus on how volunteer work can teach you to be a good leader with important leadership qualities and what leaders can learn from management approaches from non-profit organizations (NPOs). Therefore, we will examine which leadership qualities and skills can be developed and what lessons can be learnt from an acquisition of a start-up by an NPO.
