Chapter 9 in The Neurology of Business, 2022, pp 137-149 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Let us pause to familiarize ourselves with a few basics of coping with complexity. We will need these fundamentals to take further diagnostic steps in dealing with complexity. Therefore, this chapter explores how to measure complexity, how it behaves, and how to deal with it properly. It shows that complexity has two sides, one leading to problems, the other to performance. It introduces Ashby’s law, which states that we can only cope with complexity with complexity. On this basis, this chapter discusses the ways in which variety (the measure of complexity) can be attenuated (damped) or amplified (intensified) accordingly. It also shows how to use negative feedback loops to design implicit control structures that lead to self-control and stabilization. These structures increase performance and reduce effort.
