Chapter Chapter 10 in The Illusion of Control, 2023, pp 181-187 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter presents two types of project data that can (and should) be used in scientific studies of project management. Since project managers can access data from their projects, empirical project data should be made available to academia for research purposes. Project managers use these data not only to establish their projects’ baseline schedule but also to periodically collect progress data to measure the project performance as it progresses. Since academic researchers cannot access such empirical project data, they often generate their own artificial projects to test and validate their newly developed methods. Since access to project data is crucial for any academic study, both empirical and artificial project data, both with their advantages and disadvantages, should be available for scientific research.
