Chapter 14 in Business Opportunities and Risks in China, 2023, pp 173-183 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The chapter presents an overview on the structure and trends of service industry in China. Especially the ageing population and growing life expectancy have created a huge demand for healthcare and senior citizen care. China has a mix of public and private hospitals; so far, the number of foreign invested hospitals is very limited, serving a small high-end market. Competition from well-equipped public hospitals, price pressure, regulatory hurdles and culturally based different treatment methods have so far deterred investors from non-Asian countries. The homecare market in China is still underdeveloped; the entry threshold is much lower than for investment in hospitals and may provide promising opportunities for foreign investors.
