Chapter 2 in Business Opportunities and Risks in China, 2023, pp 3-20 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract A basic understanding of China is essential for establishing business relationships and avoiding miscommunications. This chapter provides a brief introduction to China’s history, political administration and cultural background, including the status of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Hong Kong and Macao returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 and 1999, respectively. For a transitional period of 50 years, they retain the status as special administrative regions (SARs) with their own currencies, legislations and economic and social systems, requiring business strategies different from Mainland China. The relation of Mainland China with Taiwan is defined by the ‘status quo’; the international community officially abides to the ‘one-China policy’, while Taiwan in practice governs itself. China has 55 officially recognised ethnic minorities. Almost all members of the business community speak Chinese, but different cultures and patterns of consumption in minority areas create unique niche markets. China is a predominantly non-religious country; however, some religious beliefs have regional influence.
