Chapter Chapter 4 in Strategy Praxis, 2023, pp 105-152 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Micro-level analysis serves to deepen a strategic analysis by generating a better understanding of specific aspects of a strategic challenge that relate to the context within it presents itself. As such, micro-level analysis may be applied to gain deeper insights pertaining to a firm’s relevant external competitive environment and its firm-internal competitive basis. In this chapter, we examine the application of externally- and internally focused frameworks of strategic analysis. Notably in strategic analysis, micro-analyses are subordinate to high-level strategic analysis since they address contextual elements of an analysis and not its overall purpose. In the practice field, the real challenge encountered lies not so much in the availability of micro-level frameworks of analysis; the strategic management literature features an exhaustive repertoire of frameworks and models. Rather, the challenge revolves around the choice and application of frameworks—knowing whether, and if prompted, how to use a particular framework appropriately. This chapter elaborates only on a select number of micro-analysis frameworks; the emphasis is on their application and integration in first principles-based, insight-driven problem-solving. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the integration and limitations of these frameworks in strategic problem-solving.
