Abstract Bridging the lab and the market is not straightforward and requires systematic and methodical work to transform an invention to an innovative product or service. Commercialisation via a start-up is the most difficult route but offers independence and relative rapidity and eventual success can bring many concrete and major benefits to a researcher entrepreneur.
