Chapter 5 in Transparency and Corporate Washing in the Age of Sustainability, 2025, pp 97-119 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree to which a collection of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns may have an impact on corruption in the European banking industry. This work is a unique endeavor within the research community. The majority of the time, academics who study this topic investigate the financial components of a financial institution as possible catalysts for the worsening of corruption issues inside that organization. Nevertheless, this research stands out because it acknowledges anti-competition concerns as a key factor that has the potential to considerably affect the creation of fraud and bribery issues. For the purpose of examining cases of corruption. During the fiscal years 2018–2022, an evaluation was carried out using the entropy-weighted Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach to evaluate the performance of anti-competitive controversy procedures at 344 financial institutions located in Europe. According to the results of the study, the traits that have the greatest effect on anti-competitive actions are those that include environmental controversy and fair competition policy. Furthermore, it has been shown that the financial sectors in Scandinavian nations are the ones that exhibit the greatest levels of anti-competitive behavior.
