Chapter 1 in Breaking Barriers with Open Innovation in Germany, 2026, pp 1-7 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the challenges faced by German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in their innovation activities within an increasingly complex and restrictive economic environment. Based on theoretical foundations and practical experience, particularly that of Dr. Marc Vathauer—Managing Director of MSF-Vathauer Antriebstechnik and author of this study—the chapter analyzes how structural, financial, and organizational barriers impair the innovative capacity of SMEs. The discussion places these challenges within the context of Germany's recent economic development, characterized by stagnant growth following the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on industrial competitiveness. Based on qualitative and quantitative research, including semi-structured interviews and a comprehensive online survey, the book identifies crucial success factors for innovation, such as selecting suitable R&D partners, anticipating market developments, and implementing structured innovation management approaches. This chapter argues that SMEs can increase their competitiveness despite limited resources by adopting elements of the open innovation paradigm, traditionally used by multinational corporations (MNCs).
