Abstract: Abstract China’s phenomenal growth has been achieved in a largely inefficient, resource-intensive way, similar to western countries in the early and mid-twentieth century. In the past, environmental effects were a secondary consideration in the pursuit of economic growth, and the level of environmental awareness within the population and even the government has been very low.
