Abstract The following chapter gives a general introduction in the modes of operation, strategies, and focal issues of Strategic Purchasing. The reader is given an overview of the functions and areas of activity of modern Buyers, while fundamental terms of Purchasing are being introduced. Furthermore, the reader will be able to understand and recognise the importance of Purchasing within a business context and to get a first glimpse of the aims of Purchasing as a business function and of the actual challenges with which it is confronted.
