Abstract: Abstract Over the last decades, open source development has become an integral part of the software industry, a key component of the innovation strategies of all major IT providers and an important vehicle to increase brand recognition. This chapter provides a systematic overview of the genesis and history of open source software development communities, their socio-economic contexts and their entrepreneurial impact.
