Abstract:
Abstract Well-educated employees are the most important asset for a company to be successful under market conditions. This is even more true in the digital economy because these employees are the source of innovations. However, to be innovative, such employees need an inspiring work place and some level of freedom. Consequently, such employees cannot easily be controlled and, therefore, the managers face a principal-agent problem. To solve this, the employer has to win the employees loyalty. This can be achieved if the employer offers long term as well as short-term development opportunities. Based on a study in the open source community, I argue that the latter can be achieved by providing project visions and optimal challenges.
