Chapter 2 in Green China, 2012, pp 33-60 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The sustainable future of China depends on solving the green paradox of China. On the one hand, the economic growth had tremendous detrimental ecological and social effects. Examples are CO2 emissions and pollution of air and water. On the other hand, Chinese firms are worldwide front-runners in wind and solar energy. For the near future, this situation will not change very easy and not very quick. The choice to open China and to choose the path of prosperity and wealth creation cannot be left very easily anymore. Large portions of the people of China have now experienced a better and wealthier life than previous generations. But even a larger portion of the population has not been levied in better and wealthier position. Economic growth has become a necessity to satisfy the needs and fulfill expectations of the large majority waiting for their share. It poses the Chinese leaders for the greatest challenge in recent history. Political lives and the legitimacy of Chinese government depend on synthesizing the paradox of economic growth with ecological and social detrimental effects. The central government is aware of this and has taken policy measures to encounter the issue of sustainability and implementing Triple P performance criteria. On their turn, the actions to create a sustainable society by both Chinese government and business organizations put the West for an equal big challenge.
