Chapter Chapter 20 in The Road to a Modern IT Factory, 2014, pp 153-158 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract “Do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life or do you want to come with me and change the world?” Steve Jobs used this legendary provocative pitch to bring Jon Sculley on board as the future CEO of Apple Computers. An optimized procurement portfolio and the right choice of suppliers needs no less. Are we working with the best in the business? Excellence and innovation depend on it. Customers expect top quality and fair conditions. Fulfilling these expectations only becomes possible with the aid of the right suppliers. They need to be able and prepared to deliver high quality at reasonable prices, something that can only be achieved by engaging energetically with vendors and regularly re-negotiating terms to stay competitive. Passive actors need to become active contributors and become committed to programs like “Zero Outage”. Suppliers need to feel the same pressure that we feel from our customers, and they need to be willing to develop solutions for our customers in tandem with us. Partnership and appreciation guarantee shared success. This chapter takes a look at the criteria for high-performance supplier management.
