Chapter Chapter 5 in Doing Business in India, 2022, pp 55-70 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The chapter goes through the economic state of the country and the economic development in pre and post-independent India with effect on business. India had been extremely rich, cultured and wealthy in the past. Its richness brought many invaders to its shores and hinterland. Economic exploitation and drain of wealth had been the major causes of the country seeing poverty, illiteracy and unemployment. The British rule systematically made India poor and underdeveloped.
