Chapter Chapter 11 in Lean Management for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, 2023, pp 179-192 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract There is a lot of ambiguity, and overlap in the way terms such as variability, uncertainty, risk etc, are defined or understood by most of us. We clarify and present a logical sequence of these terms in the increasing order of impact and investment. The presented sequence helps SME owner to make a clear assessment of her current situation and choose a relevant strategy. A few recent disruptions and their impacts on different supply chains are described to set context for the chapter. A few strategies adopted by Toyota to tackle disruptions will make the reader realize the importance of not getting blinded by waste-removal mind-set. Instead, whenever a disruption occurs, a Lean firm pauses, reflects and reassesses the new reality and adds appropriate cushions in its supply chains. And then via its continuous improvement efforts, removes the cushions on an ongoing basis also.
