Chapter Chapter 4 in Lean Management for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, 2023, pp 39-50 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The essence of management philosophies such as Lean is that there are many possible approaches to implementation. When Lean is seen as a collection of tools, organizations tend to implement the tools with progressive difficulty in adaption. When Lean is viewed as a philosophy there exists a well-thought out progression of phases that ensure sustained results. Lean implementation methodology for SMEs is a little different from the conventional approach used by large organizations and large global consulting companies. This methodology is split into five phase - diagnostic, create flow, enable flow, standardize and sustain. However, we must treat this as only a broad framework. Motivating SMEs to take up and pursue Lean in the long-term may require some tweaking of this framework. We discuss two ways to attract the attention of the top management - the rapid process improvement approach and the problem solving approach. The benefits of both are illustrated through case examples in this chapter.
