Abstract: Abstract Lean, in its original form, is a journey rather than a goal. In this spirit, there are five degrees of maturity, in terms of sustenance of Lean results. These stages are (a) tried and failed, (b) successful pilot, (c) stand-alone intervention, (d) enhanced lean, and (e) lean thinking. The path to lean is interspersed with numerous intermediate benefits, too tempting for SMEs to cash on, and be contented with rather than to push oneself further along the path of excellence. The risk of stopping mid-way is to slip back to old ways of doing things, and thereby lose gains made even by partial Lean implementations. Empirical studies show that culture building and process improvement initiatives provide most sustained Lean results, as against productivity or customer service improvements.
