Abstract:
Abstract Oenogastronomic tourism, defined as the exploration of local food and wine cultures, has gained significant prominence in the tourism industry, prompting a deeper examination of its relationship with authentic experiences. The chapter aims to examine oenogastromic experiential authenticity by identifying how the rich historical culture of a place can become more prominent and promoted through the modern development of urban locations. The chapter adopts a case study approach to explore the city of Limassol, a seaside town in Cyprus that has witnessed remarkable growth in the last few years with new infrastructure and superstructure that attract foreign investments. Limassol is linked with the legendary wine of Commandaria, produced by an endemic grape variety, and its production has its traits from the twelfth century. Commandaria wine has been directly linked with the Medieval Kingdom of the Crusaders and the wedding of the King of England, Richard the Lionheart, in Limassol. The qualitative inquiry incorporates semi-structured interviews with key players in the tourism and hospitality industry. The study suggests that attending to oenogastronomic interactions can enable a city to maintain an authentic and unique image. However, the wine’s history is not adequately promoted and is neglected because of the town’s rapid development, which undermines its cultural identity and heritage. The study results also bring to the fore the imperative of promoting the city’s history and culture through wine and gastronomy as a part of its new and contemporary face. This can constitute the main hallmark of its uniqueness and differentiation in the tourism landscape and positively contribute to the city’s image.
