Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this paper is to quantify the impact of fuel additives in the commercial management of a vessel and to determine the benefits of its use. As the shipping industry has recently began to impose emission regulations in a large scale, and vessels’ costs already seem to grow due to the presence of such regulations, it is crucial for owners, especially of older vessels or heavy consumers, to minimize the damages. Along with the imposition of such regulations and due to speculations of regulations to be possibly imposed in the future, a fuel additive market for the maritime industry has arisen. This paper examines the impact of such additives in the commercial management of the vessel from the chartering point of view and benefits from port authorities in respect to emission regulations. Furthermore, it examines the costs and benefits of such additives taking into account changes in performance, maintenance, and port-related costs.
