Chapter Chapter 1 in Collaborative Spaces and FabLabs, 2024, pp 1-11 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In today’s dynamic work landscape, the rise of collaborative spaces—both physical and virtual—has revolutionised how professionals interact and innovate. This chapter embarks on an exhilarating journey through the vibrant world of collaborative spaces, unravelling their multifaceted nature, driving forces, and profound impacts on modern work culture. From their historical roots to their pivotal role amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 era, we delve into how these spaces ignite creativity, fuel knowledge exchange, and seamlessly adapt to the ever-evolving work environment. Through a captivating exploration of diverse typologies, from public–private initiatives to formal–informal governance structures, and considerations of temporal–spatial dynamics, we unveil the remarkable versatility of collaborative spaces. FabLabs, coworking hubs, hackerspaces/makerspaces—each classification holds a unique key to fostering innovation and fostering vibrant communities. By embracing these spaces, we witness a paradigm shift towards flexible, interconnected work environments that prioritise ingenuity, connectivity, and collective synergy.
