Chapter Chapter 1 in Counterfeiting and Piracy, 2016, pp 1-5 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the counterfeiting and piracy phenomena and to illustrate the purpose of the book. After delving into what illicit trade is, the chapter highlights which industries are affected the most by it, what the numbers of the phenomena are on an international level, the typologies of counterfeit and pirated products, and the main distribution channels. It then gives a brief overview of the academic research on the topic over the past few decades and goes on to put forth the objectives of the volume. Finally, it outlines the structure of the remaining chapters.
