Chapter Chapter 1 in Management Theory by Chester Barnard, 2021, pp 1-8 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This book aims to explain Barnard’s management theory clearly, faithfully, and systematically. Barnard’s management theory is founded on his organization theory; therefore, the book also clarifies how his management theory is connected with his organization theory. The Functions of the Executive is essential reading for management students; however, it is known to be abstract and difficult. Therefore, this book is designed to serve as an introductory guide for undergraduate and graduate students. Firstly, this chapter argues Barnard’s basic philosophy. Barnard learns and creates his theory from experience, and so it is important to understand how he shapes his basic philosophy on the basis of his experience. Secondly, the chapter explains what research methods Barnard adopts to create his theory from experience. Thirdly, this chapter briefly summarizes Barnard’s organization theory, because some readers may not be familiar with it. Finally, it offers an overview of this book.
