Chapter 19 in Leading Organizational Development and Change, 2020, pp 421-448 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, the most recent trends within the field and practice of OD are explored. Within today’s contemporary business environment characterized by continuous change, innovation, creativity, technological advancements, and flexibility, there are lags in OD practices within the organizational contexts. It is important for all OD practitioners, key organizational members and/or stakeholders, and businesses in general to keep abreast of and be responsive to the key trends within the field as they emerge. This chapter specifically identifies the key trends that have emerged within OD in recent time in the global business context. The changing nature of work, the changing nature of the workforce, the relationship between technology and OD, and the impact of the global economy on OD practices are assessed as being among the top trends in OD. The challenge of balancing flexibility and speed with critical thinking and involvement are also critically assessed here. Other challenges facing OD in the context of current and emerging trends are further identified and described. Finally, the key OD trends within the Caribbean/Latin American contexts are identified and assessed.
