Chapter 6 in Leading Organizational Development and Change, 2020, pp 143-165 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In the face of environmental changes such as socio-cultural, economic, political, and technological developments taking place in today’s business world, the structures of businesses are becoming more and more complicated, management approaches are changing, and the changes within organizations are accelerating. Managing resistance to change and sustaining the momentum for change within organizations continue to be problematic in such a context for organizational change leaders. This chapter examines the role of organizational change leadership in whole system organizational change. In fact, effective change leadership draws key principles from traditional and contemporary leadership approaches. Hybrid leadership approaches are therefore recommended to ‘best fit’ the needs of each organization. The roles of communication, education, and involvement in the change leadership approach are specifically examined. Resistance to change is also addressed as a key challenge facing organizational leaders and strategies for managing resistance are detailed. Finally, recommendations are made for the sustenance of the change momentum within organizations, and a process model is developed for the leadership of organizational change and development.
