Abstract:
Abstract Regardless of the route to enter employment disabled employees are likely to experience ableism, where they are discriminated because of their difference in abilities compared with abled-bodied individuals. By drawing on the data from ethnographic field notes and semi-structured interviews this chapter analyses the daily workings of, and the experiences of individuals who work in a manufacturing sheltered employment workshop that accommodates disabled employees in the UK. Four themes are discussed: capability and possibility; disability as an asset; support: assistance or hindrance; and transition: moving on from sheltered employment. Finally based on the data analysed recommendations are made for organizations and employers that promote inclusive employment practices to support disabled employees.
