Chapter 30 in The Palgrave Handbook of Disability at Work, 2020, pp 523-538 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This final chapter reflects how each of the different sections within the book interacts and how the combined knowledge can be used to inform academics, policy makers, individuals with disabilities and organizational leaders. We consider how the book has followed the encounters of people with disability throughout the work process, rather than focusing on one element of disability in the workplace. The presentation of case studies in the majority of chapters demonstrates the gulf between policy/rhetoric and real-world experiences. In doing so we reflect on the gaps that still exist in our knowledge of work and disability, exploring what needs to be done to ensure that the working environment enables people with disabilities to compete career-wise with those without disabilities. We argue that this can be achieved through bridging the gap between the implementation of policy, rehabilitation, accommodations, knowledge and the actual experiences of people with disabilities.
