Chapter 9 in The Palgrave Handbook of Disability at Work, 2020, pp 151-166 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD: APA, Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, American Psychiatric Publishing, 2013) have high rates of unemployment and underemployment, even relative to other disability groups. Though more empirical research regarding how to support ASD employment is needed, prior research suggests some support strategies and workplace interventions that may be effective. In this chapter, we outline the key characteristics of ASD, highlighting characteristics that may lead to challenges in obtaining and maintaining employment. We then discuss both individual- and organization-level interventions and strategies that can improve employment outcomes for individuals with ASD in competitive or supported employment. We also include two case studies of successful employment programs for individuals with ASD in diverse industries.
