Abstract:
Abstract Organizational structure appears as one of the major challenges in the servitization of manufacturing firms. Decisions about organizational structure are closely linked to those concerning strategy, and manufacturers need to decide whether to integrate or separate product and service business units. However, there is no consensus and the literature on servitization still does not provide a clear answer on the question of the separation or integration of service and product activities. In order to help alleviate the current stalemate, this chapter calls for a new direction in research on organizational structures in servitization, especially regarding its epistemological foundations. It first proceeds to a review of the “to separate or integrate” debate, then suggests some avenues for studying organizational structures in servitization within alternative and multiple epistemological paradigms.
