Chapter 18 in The Strategy Planning Process, 2022, pp 161-172 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The industry analysis is a centerpiece of the strategic planning process. This chapter shows how to assess the competitive situation in an industry. After a short introduction in Sect. 18.1, Sect. 18.2 explains Porter’s five forces model and illustrates it in an inset on a capital goods producer. In Sect. 18.3, the concept of strategic groups is introduced and a qualitative approach to identify relevant strategic groups in an industry is proposed. An inset on the Swiss watch industry illustrates the forming of strategic groups in this industry. Based on these models, a process for the analysis of the relevant industries is recommended in Sect. 18.4.
