Chapter 1 in The Palgrave Handbook of Servant Leadership, 2023, pp 1-22 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter presents servant leadership lessons from the life-example of Gandhi. Gandhi continues to be on most people’s short list of servant leaders. Albert Einstein (1939 p. 80) called Gandhi “a beacon to the generations to come.” Gandhi peacefully led the greatest anti-colonial movement in history, showed how to live an accomplished political life without compromising integrity, revealed a rare model of servant leadership, and provided politics much-needed moral and spiritual underpinning. He approached his lifework in an utterly selfless manner, never seeking for himself any title, position, or office. Gandhi’s life shows the power of peace, humility, and service toward a cause for the greater good. These values are highly resonant with servant leadership. Gandhi drew upon the teachings of the Bhagavad Gītā, the Indian spiritual text par excellence, regarding selfless service, truthfulness, and humility. With his life as his message, Gandhi now belongs to all humanity, and his engaging servant leadership lessons apply to all countries and communities. Whenever a soul peacefully raises her voice against any kind of oppression, Gandhi’s legacy will endure.
