Abstract: Abstract By its very nature, the United State military embodies the foundational attributes of servant leadership, from entry level enlisted personnel to the highest executive level officers. These include a commitment to stewardship by agreeing to give one’s life to protect others, promoting the greater public interest, upholding and protecting the constitution, service over self, a dedication to altruism, delaying self-gratification for the greater good, and a foundational embrace of deontological, teleological, and character virtue ethical conduct. This chapter describes the distinguished military careers of retired Rear Admirals Larry C. Baucom and Bill McCarthy through the lens of servant leadership. Each served the nation with excellence in a series of progressively responsible leadership positions culminating in the command of aircraft carriers, or “floating cities.” Both men led with servant leader humility, a level 5 leadership attribute as described by Jim Collins in Good to Great. Admiral Baucom commanded the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and Admiral McCarthy the USS George Washington (CVN 73) with great success and acclaim. The chapter will illustrate their common and unique personality and servant leadership attributes that made each successful as grounded in the empirical and conceptual literature supported by in-depth qualitative interviews and a summary of key learning points and discussion questions for in-depth reader reflection.
