Chapter 6 in The Palgrave Handbook of Servant Leadership, 2023, pp 117-139 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract While leadership is a system that is based on the policy of instructing and guiding, servant leadership implies a willful and an absolutely selfless desire for prosperity or benefit of the “others.” A leader who is engaged in the service of either society or people rises to become a source of the leadership of benevolence and compassion, which includes the development and consideration of other’s interests rather than his individual self. This sensitivity towards others and the aspiration of serving them have often been found in social and spiritual leaders who have devoted their life, work, and purpose to the progress and growth of the masses. Anecdotes or legends of such leaders with astonishing qualities and timeless virtues have been prevalent in Indian societies in the form of stories or folklore. These fables and legends have been cherished by modern readers as also by scholars and intellectuals of all ages and reflect their distinctive emotion of Seva (service) by way of undertaking a psychological analysis of giving and caring. This study aims to highlight the desirable virtues of a servant leader, his behavioral patterns, and his sense of well-being and contentment apart from comprehending the significance of selfless service in leadership studies.
