Abstract:
Abstract Spaces of organizing are systems for storytelling, where narratives provide a way to learn and share information with others, shape our values and beliefs, expose privilege and inequity, and build understanding and empathy; but storytelling can also be used to misrepresent and dilute the people, cultures, and experiences in organizations. Informed by a critical framing of narrative habitus (Fleetwood, Crime, Media, Culture 12:173–192, 2016; Frank, A.W. (2010). Letting stories breathe: A socio-narratology. University of Chicago Press.), we theorize connections between narratives and social practices to address the potential of critical thinking and storying to challenge dominant ideologies, encourage perspective-taking, and liberate people from rigid beliefs in spaces of organizing.
