Chapter Chapter 1 in Mathematics Education in Africa, 2022, pp 1-18 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Little is known about the readiness of African countries in education in general, and mathematics education in particular, to embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). This chapter reviewed and analysed 20 peer-reviewed articles downloaded from Google Scholar, Research Gate, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), and Academia databases. The reviewed articles were published from 2014 until 2021. The findings showed that the readiness of mathematics education for the 4IR is still unknown in many African countries. The identified main issues that hinder Africa from being ready for the 4IR include: insufficient infrastructure, lack of continuous professional development, and mathematics curricula that are not designed to accommodate changes for the 4IR. Based on the reviewed literature, the authors of this book chapter conclude that South Africa is the only country on the continent that shows the readiness for the 4IR in mathematics education, although it also faces some challenges. Therefore, human capital development, the increase of infrastructure, and policies that support the readiness for Africa to embrace the 4IR should be implemented.
