Abstract: Abstract In recent years, advancements in digital technology have been a driving force behind the proliferation of the online labour market. These marketplaces seek to strike a healthy equilibrium between the supply of and demand for labour. Commercial and noncommercial activities, such as labour demand and supply, are coordinated through platforms and are sometimes referred to as “the collaborative economy,” which is a term that is commonly used. This chapter presents a critical review of the literature on platform work in Sub-Saharan Africa. The chapter presents the conceptual clarification of platform work, the key actors in platform work, constraints and ways forwards to platform work in Africa. The chapter also presents the implications for HR and draws final conclusions from the literature.
