Chapter 4 in Managing Human Resources in Africa, 2023, pp 79-103 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the issue of women’s empowerment in Egypt to improve gender equality, female participation in the workforce, and leadership and management roles. It does so by highlighting the role of human resource management practitioners, policies, and practices in achieving Egypt’s vision of creating a digital society that includes women’s empowerment and facilitates sustainable economic development. The chapter is divided into two main sections. The first section starts with an analysis of the Egyptian business context, highlighting the function and effects of the religious and sociocultural contexts, education, workplace cultures and psychological contracts, as well as current HRM policies and practices in Egypt. The second section focuses on the current state of gender equality, work-life balance, gendered perceptions of women’s empowerment and career success, the encouragement and advancement of women in leadership positions, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how HRM can support the advancement of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Finally, we identify the implications for HRM and policymakers in Egypt, with a particular emphasis on achieving the goal of strengthening women’s empowerment, which is specified in the Egypt Vision.
