Chapter Chapter 14 in The Palgrave Handbook of Fulfillment, Wellness, and Personal Growth at Work, 2023, pp 267-279 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic following its worldwide spread. Healthcare workers have been at the frontline of the fight against the virus. However, even if the pandemic is declining, its effect on healthcare workers greatly maximizes their stress levels. This chapter aims to investigate how nurses’ individual resilience affects their perceived stress levels, analyzing how the characteristics of the work tasks can improve or worsen the above relationship. The study uses a descriptive cross‐sectional design, considering a sample of Italian nurses who voluntarily participated in an online survey conducted between April and May 2020. Results show that increasing levels of individual resilience reduce stress perceptions, but this beneficial effect decreases when work tasks become more complex and unpredictable. The study extends prior research on stress perception, considering the impact of individual abilities and work task characteristics.
