A Conceptual Crux Events Framework

Devon Gidley ()

Chapter Chapter 8 in Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Indie Video Game Industry, 2025, pp 189-204 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, I build a theoretical framework around crux events, incubator development, and indie video game creation. The theory is process based. It starts with the crux event, followed by the reaction, and ends with the outcome. Based on my ethnography, I propose three types of crux events: gateways; surprises; and crises. Social actors react to the events in three main ways: embrace, resist, or ignore. In turn, this leads to several possible outcomes: distraction, inspiration, questions, or hope. I will show how my theory builds or compares to other theories. Like all ethnography, it is specific and particular to the context and circumstances. I believe it has some transferability—both to other similar places and to less similar ones—and I will suggest how.
