Chapter Chapter 15 in The Palgrave Handbook of Change and Resilience at Work, 2025, pp 309-333 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the transformative journey of Human Resources (HR) in higher education institutions (HEIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring a strategic pivot toward resilience and flexibility amid unforeseen changes. Twelve themes are identified through qualitative analysis, depicting a dynamic shift in HR functions from employee wellness prioritization to the rapid adoption of remote work technology. Utilizing Kotter’s Eight-Step Process as a framework, the author delves into how HR leaders addressed immediate challenges and strategically repositioned their departments to foster organizational resilience and drive innovation. This examination highlights the critical role of adaptive HR leadership in navigating crises and enhancing employee engagement, offering insights into building flexibility and resilience, thereby enriching the discourse on leadership and management in times of flux.
