Chapter Chapter 21 in The Topos of Music, 2002, pp 455-463 from Springer

Abstract: Summary Metrics and rhythmics are an excellent elementary test-case for global structures in music. We shall critically review two commonly known approaches: the Riemann and the Jackendoff—Lerdahl theories. We then develop the concepts of global time structures and their topologies, including associated weight functions.
