Chapter Chapter 52 in The Topos of Music, 2002, pp 993-998 from Springer

Abstract: Summary This chapter introduces the best evolved theoretical part of instrumentation: string quartet theory. It starts with a short historic synopsis and then reviews Ludwig Finscher’s work [151] on string quartet theory. We then focus on the technical core subject: the violin family as an instrumentation paradigm for the string quartet. The chapter concludes with a general discussion of semantics of sound colors.
